Letters to PR Week
Overview – In the summer of 2009 I got two letters published in PR Week. The first was in response to the annual feature that PR Week ran about PR degress. The second was about the use of social media in the Afghan elections.
Brief – To write an interesting response to the feature in less than 200 words.
Objective – To get my letter to the editor published the following week.
Task – First of all I considered what the likely responses to the PR degree feature were going to be. I was expecting academics, particularly those from Leeds Met to respond quickly, defending their role as PR academics. I decided in order to differentiate my response and make it stand out from the crowd, I would comment on how the argument has developed, rather than just supporting one of the polar views regarding PR degrees.
For the letter on social media used in the Afghan elections I decided to focus on how social media can be a force for democracy, but also to plant in people's minds that digital PR is not a fad. I feel I achieved this with the question 'if they are going digital in Afghanistan, why aren't you?'Publication – PR Week 12 June and
PR Week 17 July.
Results – I was delighted that both letters got printed. However, both published letters was quite heavily edited.
