Overview - League Weekly is one of the UK's biggest selling rugby league newspapers. It has a circulation of several thousand and is sold throughout the North-West, Yorkshire and certain places in London.
Brief – In March 2008 League Weekly contacted the Leeds Met Communications team with regard to producing match report for the Leeds Met versus Doncaster RLFC Carnegie Challenge Cup tie. As I was a frequent reporter of Leeds Met sport matches it was decided that I was suitably qualified and should write the match report.
Importantly, the League Weekly editor asked me to adopt an objective standpoint in my writing and forget my bias towards Leeds Met. The report was required to be between 300-400 words in length and had to follow a strict set of criteria. In addition, the editor of League Weekly had to receive the match report by 11am the following day.
Objective – To write a match report that was between 300-400 words long.
Task - I attended the match and made careful notes throughout including the line-ups, tries, scorers and any other noteworthy items. After the game had finished I conducted internet research into the Leeds Met and Doncaster RLFC teams. I did this in order to increase my background knowledge of the teams, which I felt would enhance the match report. I then worked to a tight deadline and wrote the report before sending it to League Weekly.
Publication – League Weekly.
Results - The match report was printed word for word. It gained coverage of 1/2 a page in colour and included a branded image. This task has enhanced my experience of match day reporting and writing under pressure to a tight deadline. The Leeds Met Communications team were pleased with the report as it highlighted Leeds Met’s valiant performance rather on focussing on the heavy score line.
