Carnegie Super Sport News

Overview - As part of Leeds Met's ambition to be a leading sports university, Carnegie Super Sport News was created as a method of communicating the faculty’s latest news to students, staff and alumni. It was decided an e-newsletter straight to a recipient’s inbox was more effective than trying to drive traffic to the Carnegie faculty website. I have been editor of the weekly e-newsletter since its inception in September 2007 and at present it has a circulation of several hundred.

Brief - I was given the task of producing an e-newsletter that shows the strength of the Leeds Met sports teams, whilst incorporating 'new' technology such as podcasts. The e-newsletter was required to preview the university’s sport teams, whilst being concise, interesting and informative.

Objective – To produce an e-newsletter that can be sent out at 4pm every Monday.

Task - This project involved me leading a team of three on a weekly basis. Predominantly we would liaise with players, coaches and other members of staff during the week in order to seek out newsworthy sport stories for Monday’s deadline. One of the team would create podcasts, ready for me to edit.

We would also carry out extensive research in conjunction with BUSA to gain a greater understanding of university sport and to ensure that the content would be accurate. Once all this information was collated I would then go about writing the content for the e-newsletter and sourcing appropriate images. Finally I would edit the content before one of team would create the document.

Results - Carnegie Super Sport News has been very well received by Leeds Met staff, students and alumni with increasing numbers signing up to receive it. In addition, the e-newsletter has been ear-marked for an increased budget such is its popularity and the potential to expand its features. This project has also enabled me to learn about new technologies such as creating and editing podcasts which I feel will provide me with invaluable experience for the future.
